Here is what we are learning this week:
Reading - We are finishing up text features (captions, glossary, index, diagram, etc...) and working on types of paragraphs: Cause and Effect, Sequencing, Comparing and Contrasting, Description, etc... Writing - We are finishing up our Informational writing on the animal we chose. When they are finished, they will begin typing it up and adding text features to it. Science - We are beginning to talk about animal adaptations and how they help them survive in the region they live in. Social Studies - We are finishing up our study of how the Native Americans used their resources to survive in the region they lived in. We will also be presenting on our region we chose and how the Native Americans used the resources in that area to survive. Grammar - We are learning how to capitalize titles and reviewing prefixes and suffixes. Math - We are working on solving word problems and looking for patterns in addition and multiplication. THE HOLIDAY SHOP. We go this Thursday! Send money in on that day!
Acworth Families: The PTA is sponsoring a Holiday Shop for your students to purchase small gifts. A scheduled time has been arranged for each class to shop. Please look for this information to come home on Friday; the time and date for your student's class is listed on the flyer. Please only send money on their schedued date as this will be the only time they visit the Holiday Shop. The gifts at the Holiday Shop range from $0.25 to $17.00. Here are the things we are learning about in our subject areas:
Reading - Point of View Writing - We are writing our Informational writing on our topic we have chosen. Then we will add graphic features like diagrams and a Table of Contents, etc..... Science - We are learning about Fossils. This will be fun to investigate on Cobb Digital Library at home! Social Studies - We are learning about the Arctic Native Americas, Southeast and North West Native Americans. We are focusing on the region they lived in and how they used the land for their food, clothing, and shelter. Math - Understanding the AREA of a shape. We are working on the distributive property this week in math and it is really hard. Please see the example below and look it up on a web site to practice with your child.
3 x 13 = This means 3 groups of 13. Draw the array first. X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X Have them separate the array into 2 arrays that they know. The first array is 3 x 10 = 30 The second array is 3 x 3 = 9 Now add 30 + 9 = 39. This is your answer to the larger array. Make sure your child wears tennis shoes and clothes for outside on Wednesday!

I wanted to let you know that the MATH TEACHER showed all of your kids how to get to HER blog and get to math games they can practice. She will add games throughout the year as we move to different topics. Of course, they probably won’t remember how to get there, but I told them their parents could help them. I made sure they knew they could go to the games anywhere, not just in the Math Lab room, so they can use those games for math practice anytime! I also showed them how to access our Website so they can get on COBB DIGITAL LIBRARY as well. They can access all kinds of fun computer activities for FREE! (BRAIN POP, PEBBLE GO , TUMBLE BOOKS) CONFERENCES HAVE BEEN GOING VERY WELL AND EVERYONE HAS SHOWN UP ON TIME! Thank you so much for coming in to speak to me about your child's progress. Reading : WE are learning about MAIN IDEA and details in the text. We will focus on fiction and non-fiction text. Please help them find the main idea each night while they are reading. Writing: We are beginning to learn about informational writing. Please ask your child about the topic they have chosen. Social Studies and Science are not being taught this week due to early release! Spelling-Grammar. There are no spelling words this week. WE will begin taking a weekly spelling test each Thursday starting next week. Math - We are working with multiplication and division using arrays this week! |
